What types of care are given in the hospital setting?

When a person experiences serious illness, they might be in hospital already or they might be at home. Members of the healthcare team work together to discover the reasons for the serious illness and provide care around the clock to treat the problem.

When people get very sick, and become critically ill, they can be admitted to specialty areas in hospital like the Palliative Care Unit or the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Sometimes this happens with very little warning.

It is hard to communicate what you want when you are on life support, so that is why we are inviting you to think about things like this ahead of time. This guide presents two types of care that can be given in the hospital setting: life support and comfort care. Keep reading to learn more about your options.
