Northern and Indigenous Health and Healthcare Open Education Textbook survey

Dear Colleague,

The University of the Arctic Northern Nursing Education Network is developing a peer reviewed open education textbook on Northern and Indigenous Health and Health Care. The provision of northern health care entails many unique challenges and circumstances that are rarely represented in mainstream health sciences education. This open education textbook will provide a resource on health and health care from a northern perspective for the growing number of health professionals being educated in northern communities, as well as provide a useful tool to orient southern health professionals going to work in northern communities.

The textbook's learning objectives include:
  • Understanding the unique health care needs and professional responsibilities that result from remoteness and population sparsity.
  • Identifying the social, environmental and cultural aspects of a community that inform and impact care needs.
  • Appreciating traditional and Indigenous medicines and approaches to healing as part of a holistic care system.
  • Exploring the similarities and differences in northern health care across the circumpolar region.
Our goal is to incorporate content on these and other relevant topics from perspectives across the eight Circumpolar countries.

As an expert in Northern and Indigenous Health and Health Care, we invite you to contribute to this open textbook. Specifically, we invite you to submit one (or more) 1,000 word document that summarizes a topic related to the sections in the open textbook, including the current state of knowledge on the topic from your specific Circumpolar region and insights from your own program of research.

Once published, this open online textbook will be free to access, peer reviewed, and available to be adopted and/or adapted by you and/or your colleagues. The deadline for submissions is February 1, 2018.

If you are interested in contributing to the open textbook, please take five minutes to complete this short survey. Upon completion, our team will follow up with you personally in the coming days.

Please complete the survey by November 15, 2017.
